National Parks in India – According to the National Wildlife Database, there are 106 national parks in India as of 2023, whose total area is 44,378 sq km and 1.35% of the total area of India. In 2021, two new national parks were announced in Assam state with the names Raimona National Park and Dihing Patkai National Park. The first national park in India was established as Jim Corbett National Park in the Uttarakhand state in the year 1936. India had a total of 5 national parks till the year 1970 and as of September 2023, the number has increased to 106 National Parks.

What is a National Park?
- A national park is a place where wildlife, flora, and fauna are strictly protected. Activities like any kind of construction work, agriculture, animal grazing, and animal hunting are completely prohibited in the national park. National Parks are declared by the state governments in India for the protection of the natural environment in a particular area.

Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
- The Wildlife Protection Act was implemented on September 9, 1972, by the Government of India to protect and conserve wildlife from illegal hunting.
